Understanding lust and dealing with it

Lust is one such distortion of love. Lust can be got rid of through the light of pragmatic knowledge, lust means wanting to grab or possess something and it enters your life because you have lost the tendency to give the tendency to love when love is at an all-time low, then lust climbs higher when love is at the top, then lust diminishes.  Love is to have the sincere feeling. I'm here for you. Lust is the feeling - "What can I get from you?"

Lust has created humongous problems in the world, and many crimes have happened or are happening today because of uncontrolled lust. It has spoiled relationships. One of the reasons for bitterness in the world is the lack of control over oneself. What happens due to a lack of spirituality? The intense joy or pleasure one experiences with your partner can turn bitter and cause heartbreak, if there is no wisdom.

This is what is happening all over, isn't it? Someone has given you intense pleasure and if you have no wisdom, you will find them to be the cause of intense misery also. If you feel miserable, you do not look at the case, you rather point a finger towards the one who has given you physical pleasure. It is wisdom that takes you away from misery. Observing the sensations within you, whether of pain or pleasure, offers a different view altogether about the entire phenomenon.

How to deal with lust? Through higher fulfilment. For example, kids crave for cotton, candy and chocolates. But when they grow up, they automatically have no such cravings. Similarly, having a higher goal in life will help when you have a lot of work to do. Sex doesn't bother you at that time.

Just ask any student if he or she is bombarded with thoughts of sex during exam time. They'll say no. For that whole month, when they have to achieve something, their mind is fully focused on it. Not once does the thought arise during exam time. They have a bundle of books to read and prepare. So engaging yourself in some creative activity is helpful.

Pleasure always makes you run towards it first and then later on makes you run away from it. That is its nature. First, you crave for it, you go towards it and then later on, you go away from it, because it becomes too much to handle.

Yoga is that which makes you centered. It stabilizes you. When you are stable and centered, if there is pleasure you enjoy it, if it's not there, you don't mind it. It's not occupying your mind, 24*7. It's not a craving that bothers you.

The more you indulge in lust, the more the stimuli. With excess stimulation, your head becomes hot and your vision blurred. This directly affects your perception, making it blurred too.  People should stop watching pornography, thinking about sex and watching it all the time really destroys the instrument called the brain at the same time.

You shouldn't blame sex. It's a natural phenomenon and all living beings originate from it. Your origin is sex, but let it not be your death too. If one is promiscuous, their death will also be sex. It's just a part of life and should be treated so. Being very natural and moderate with sex is the key.

Life needs love to survive

We are love.

We are made up of a substance called love. Like the body is made up of fat vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates and proteins. The spirit is made up of love. Love, therefore, in all its forms, is an integral part of the process of life. If you ask yourself a straight question, what is it that you want in life? It will boil down to one thing, love.

Behind every desire there is love. Life cannot move an inch without love. Life has sprung from love, moves in love and will culminate in love. Yet, we see that life is full of problems.

Sometimes, if there is no love, then life seems to be better because then there are no problems. Life comes with a whole load of problems in its wake. If you love objects more, then that becomes greed. If you love people more, it is entanglement. If you love yourself too much, that is egocentric, arrogance. If you love someone else too much, then jealousy soon follows.

Behind jealousy, greed, lust or anger, there is love. Human life cannot be without love.

Your body is like a washing machine. Your mind is like the clothes you wear. Each lifetime is like one washing cycle; pure water is like love and knowledge is the detergent. The mind enters the body to get cleansed and purified but if instead of detergent, you use dirt, then you have dirty clothes - dirtier than before. You will have to continue putting clothes in the washing machine to get them cleaned. And the process repeats itself again and again. Similarly, you will have many more births until you stop repeating the mistakes that you have been making.

Behind all the ills of society there is love. However, this love is devoid of language and knowledge. This love is devoid of vision and wisdom. Love is miserable without wisdom, rather love without wisdom is the mother of misery. We all want love, not misery. To achieve this, we need to broaden our vision and awareness. We need to know about ourselves, and we need to know how to handle our emotions and instincts. Nobody wants to be mad, angry or hateful - but we have not learnt, or we have not been taught how to handle our negative feelings and tendencies when they take over our minds or our lives.

The knowledge that unites love and wisdom, the knowledge that uplifts the spirit is spirituality.

Consciousness of an enlightened being

In a state of ignorance, imperfection is natural and perfection is an effort! In a state of wisdom or enlightenment, imperfection is an effort, while perfection is a compulsion and unavoidable!

Perfection is taking total responsibility, and total responsibility means – knowing you are the only responsible person in the whole world. When you are in total vairagya (dispassion), you can even take care of trivial and insignificant things with such perfection. Perfection is the very nature of one who is enlightened.

Knowledge is different at different levels of consciousness. At a particular level, you become “anasuya”, meaning “devoid of fault-finding eyes”. There is a certain mindset that always finds fault, even in the best of conditions. Such people will still find something wrong, even with the best possible companion, or the most beautiful painting. Such a mindset cannot know the sacred knowledge. The weaker the devotee, the purer the Guru needs to be. Lord Krishna tells Arjuna that He is giving Arjuna the royal secret because Arjuna is anasuya. Similarly, Hanuman never saw any fault in Rama.

From a distance, even craters cannot be seen; from up close, even a smooth surface will have holes. If you are only interested in the holes, you will not see the magnanimity of things. If you are not anasuya, knowledge cannot blossom in you, and then, there is no point in giving you knowledge.

If you look for imperfection, you can see imperfection even in Rama and Krishna! If Krishna had been living today, there would probably have been many court cases filed against Him for telling lies, stealing, etc.! In Buddha’s life, you don’t see any imperfection. Buddha lived a pure life, not for His own sake, but for the sake of the world – for the sake of the devotees.

If an enlightened person drinks or smokes, nothing happens to their consciousness, for in that state of enlightenment, all that one wants is the welfare of everyone, “good” for everyone and happiness on this planet.

True founder of communism

Long before Karl Marx, Lenin and Mao, a historical figure in India fought against oppression, championed the cause of the poor, denounced religious dogma and empty ritualism, and sought to inspire a righteous and selfless attitude in society. The basic tenets of communism say that all are equal, and exploiters and oppressors should be severely punished. It rebels against societal dogmas and advocates caring and sharing. The goal is to create a society free from selfishness, autocracy, aristocracy and oppression of people of any sort.

The life and message of Krishna reveals that he imbibed, taught and fought for these principles 5,230 years ago. In fact, an objective analysis of the Bhagavad Gita too would reveal that Krishna was a better communist than Karl Marx. One could go so far as to describe him as the real founder of communism!

Krishna grew up among cowherds. A cowherd himself, he worked for the empowerment of his people. Later, he killed his own uncle, Kamsa, a king who was an oppressor, thereby liberating the entire society of Mathura and Brindavan from his tyranny.

Throughout his life, Krishna cared for the poor and the weak. In the Mahabharata war, he could have sided with the powerful Kauravas but he took the side of the Pandavas, who had nothing on their side except goodwill and pure hearts. He worked for them and went as an ambassador for peace for them. So definitely his mission was with the poor and the oppressed, the victims of royal aristocrat families and therefore he is called Deenabandhu, Deenavatsala (friend of the poor).

The story of Sudama, the poor Brahmin, is a well-known episode from Krishna’s life. Often people think Brahmins were oppressors, when in fact Brahmins have always been very poor. One never hears instances or stories of rich Brahmins in history or in the puranas. But Krishna’s love and compassion was such that he honoured him, cutting across the class barriers.

Krishna also rebelled against dogmatic religious practices of those days. Even today it is well known that the entire society stopped the sacrificial puja they were doing to Indra, shifting over, on Krishna’s advice, to caring for the cows (Govardhan Pooja) and honouring the knowledge of the self. Govardhan also means honouring knowledge. He also promoted Annakoot, where there is food for everybody.

Krishna rebels against the people who are always arguing in the name of the Vedas. He has said that people who are driven by little desires, who are propitiating this deity or that, caught up in small rituals and greed, are fools (moodha). He also says, “Those who worship many devas and perform many rituals are of lesser intelligence.”

Finally, after a detailed exposition of all aspects of life, knowledge and duty, he says, “Sarva dharman parityajya mamekam sharanam vraja” (Drop all the dharma and take refuge in me, i.e., in the higher self). This is really a revolutionary thing. Karl Marx also has said drop the religion, “Religion is the opium of the masses.” But beyond religion is the quest for truth. Where does a man go further? There Krishna leads Arjuna, leads the people into that spiritual realm of experience, which is seriously lacking in communism today.

To transcend religion, one needs to understand religion. Karl Marx was not aware of Indian spirituality. All that he saw was the blind faith and the authoritarian rule of the religious institutions that existed at that time in Russia, whereas Krishna takes us beyond religion.

He also says drop religion, but it brings you to a place of spiritual awakening, of knowledge, of truth, of beauty. The confidence that builds up in a person who knows the depth and the secrets of creation is something amazing, so beautiful – without which life is dry. So make the transition from religion to spirituality. It is what was missing in the Karl Marx principle and which Krishna has very clearly demonstrated and given to the world in the form of Gita.

Communism cannot reject Krishna at any cost because he stands for all its principles in a much more meaningful manner. If we don’t see the reality, the truth with an open mind then we have merely replaced an old religion with a new religion called communism. So we have to be aware and wake up to adapt to changing times.

I wonder why the communists have not yet owned Krishna. Many times in the Gita, Krishna says, “Yo mam pasyati sarvatra” (One who sees me in everybody, one who sees oneself in everybody, is the one who sees the truth). This is the basic principle of communism – see everyone as yourself. He says the banana peel has a meaning as long as there is a banana inside. But when you eat the banana, then the peel has no value. Similarly religion can’t take people to the final truth, final goal. But it is the spirit of self-enquiry, the scientific temper in a person, that takes one deeper. Religion stays behind and one moves into a realm of pure humanism or pure divinity – this is the hallmark of Krishna’s teaching.

Unlike in the west, where scientists were tortured and questioning of the religious scriptures was prohibited, India has always encouraged questioning and contemplation. In fact, most of the scriptures in India are in the format of questions and answers. After putting forth his opinion, Krishna tells Arjuna to independently think and question; and tells him that he has the freedom to accept or reject his opinion. He never imposes his idea.

Though communism advocates rational thinking, we hear many communists do not give the freedom to people to express a different ideology. At the same time, Krishna also inspired Arjuna to fight and not accept oppression, which again is what communists say. He advises Arjuna to fight not with anger or hatred, but with intelligence, with equanimity, with wisdom.

Another principle of communism is sharing. As a small child, Krishna would share butter with all the boys, all the youngsters. Later he shared wealth. In the Srimad Bhagavatam, it said that in his last days Krishna used to go and give gifts to people every morning. A salient feature of communism is to work for the community and it comes down strongly on consumerism or greed. This is explained by Krishna in the Karma Yoga - karmanye vadhikaraste.

Krishna goes on to say that one who is really wise regards all men as equal and does not discriminate between a Brahmin and an untouchable, or a learned one and someone who is not so learned - vidyavinaya sampanna. Many people talk about communism but lead a capitalistic life. However Krishna never did that. He stood for the cause of the poor. He saw that oneness in everybody and so he was remembered for centuries.

But nowadays it is suddenly fashionable to regard even the Ramayana and Mahabharata as epics and not as something that really happened. This is ridiculous, because just a legend cannot have such an impact over the whole continent, and even beyond. The Ramayana and Mahabharata have made such an impact on civilization without any modern technology. The Sanskrit word itihasa means ‘it happened like that/it happened thus’.

To see everyone as equal is a matter of the heart, and the heart can be made to blossom only through spirituality. And uplifting the spirit is what is spirituality. So you cannot be a true communist if you don’t have that spark of love and compassion in your heart. Modern communism negates religion but leaves you in a vacuum. Devoid of spirituality, frustration overtakes life, leading one to violence and aggression or depression and suicidal tendencies. You cannot serve someone if you don’t see them as yourself or part of yourself. What was missing in communism is the very soul, that is spirituality, of which Krishna was an expert teacher.

If you are reading this, you may be a lucky one

Some of the religious paths create this fear of hell and heaven that puts people into such a turmoil of guilt and fear that the mind can never calm down. Meditation can never happen. This is very unfortunate. So even though such followers are aspirants, they are not really getting the path.

These people don’t get access to the knowledge: ‘Come on, the mind is like a river, what are you holding on to? Don’t hold on to it. All the events are gone, drop it and move on. Live in the present moment‘. This knowledge is not available to many people (who aspire to walk the spiritual path). They go on repenting about the past, feeling guilty, and the mind becomes a mess.

Of course they do pray. Their prayers do help, and they get some blessings. Blessings come to everyone, no doubt, but the knowledge, the right path and liberation remains a distant dream for them. Peace does not happen in their life. They sit with the hope that one day they will go to heaven. And so these souls get trapped with desires and fear.

They got a human life to be free from all this. So they will have to come back again to work out all these things. Again they will get into meditation.

So, a human birth, desire for a path, and the path being available to them (Maha Purusha Sannidho: getting a Spiritual Master), these three things are rare and difficult to get. If you have all three, you are lucky.

Symbolism behind Ganesh Chaturthi

Ganesha Chaturthi is celebrated on the day on which Lord Ganesha is believed to bestow his presence on earth for all his devotees. Though it is celebrated as the birthday of Lord Ganesha, the symbolism behind the festival is much deeper. Though Ganesha is worshipped as the elephant-headed God, the swaroop (form) is just to bring out its parabrahma roopa (eternal divine formlessness).

Ganesh Chaturthi marks a unique art of reaching the formless paramatma called Lord Ganesh by the repeated worship of his manifest form. Even the Ganesh Stotram, the prayers recited in the praise of Ganeshji, conveys the same. We pray to Ganesha in our consciousness to come out and sit in the idol for us for a while so that we can play with Him.

After the puja, we again pray, asking Him to go back to where He came from – our consciousness. While He is in the idol, we offer back whatever God has given us through the puja of the idol.

Ganesha is the lord of all the good qualities in us. So when we worship Him, all the good qualities blossom in us. He is also the Lord of knowledge and wisdom. Knowledge dawns only when we become aware of the Self. When there is inertia, there is no knowledge, no wisdom, nor is there any chaitanya (liveliness) or progress in life. So, the consciousness has to be awakened, and the presiding deity of consciousness is Ganesha. That’s why before every puja, the Lord Ganesha is worshipped to awaken the consciousness.

Therefore, install the idol, worship it with infinite love, meditate and experience Lord Ganesha from within. This is the symbolic essence of the Ganesh Chaturthi festival, to awaken the Ganesh tattva, which is masked inside us.

And in the end, say, ‘You have come from my heart, and you will get back into my heart.’ Like that, saying that, Ganapati, the idol, you leave it in the ocean or in the water, from where you took it. The Visarjan is for you to understand that Ganapati is not just in the idol. He has come from your heart into the idol. The prana has come there, and then the prana gets back into you after fulfilling your desires.

Putting forth your desires in front of Ganapati, you then say, ‘Ganapati, you are back in my heart.’ Then you leave that idol in the water.

The ritual of immersing (visarjan) the idols after a few days of worship reinforces the understanding that God is not in the idol; He is inside us. So, experiencing the Omnipresent in the form and deriving joy out of the form is the essence of the Ganesh Chaturthi festival. In this way, such organised festivity and worship leads to an upsurge in enthusiasm and devotion.

Embrace the symbolism of Lord Ganesha and let wisdom guide your path as you navigate the journey of life with awareness and grace.

Moving out of the cycle of karma

Grace and knowledge can cut the bondage of Karma. Otherwise there is no end to it. Good karmas will produce good karmas. Bad karmas will produce bad karmas, bad actions.

Due to bad karma you are engaged in bad actions, and these bad actions will in turn create bad karma, and that bad karma will create bad action and its results, action and its results. It will continue forever.

Confused? You're blessed

Blessed are those who are confused. Confusion means your previous knowledge has broken down. Your belief has broken down. That is a step in Knowledge. You are fused to yourself. Space is created. The mind goes blank. This is what is important. Whatever I say, whether you agree or disagree, it doesn't matter.

If you agree, it doesn't matter. If you disagree, then also it doesn't matter. But are you aware of what is happening in your own mind? That is sufficient. This moment some judgment is happening. A certain thing is stirring in the mind. You are agreeing, disagreeing. You like this. You don't like this. Awareness of what is happening within you that is self-study.

If you observe more and more, with a little practice you will see that every emotion, every thought creates a particular sensation in your system, in a particular place in your body.

And the mind becomes like a mirror. The mind becomes so hollow, so empty. Through that empty space truth dawns. That is why "I don't know" is beautiful. The moment you think "I know", then the mind is not yet hollow and empty. Knowledge, labeling things, comes into play. In India you don't find signboards everywhere. If you ask for directions, people will tell you which way to go whether they know or not.

They will tell you to go left or right. It may be completely the opposite direction, but they don't feel comfortable saying "I don't know". So you may travel for hours and discover that you have gone in just the opposite direction from where you wanted to be. The beautiful "I don't know". That is what is needed today. Innocence. And that is love.

Maintaining one's innocence on the path to enlightenment

Being in that state of consciousness, which allows knowledge to flow through, without actually knowing, that ability is within every one of us. All intuitions that arise in you arise from an area which you don't know. You cannot call it an intuition if you have already known it. As our intelligence grows, we tend to become crooked. Maintaining innocence in spite of intelligence, is wisdom, is enlightenment.

If our innocence is maintained in spite of intelligence, it has great value, naturalness. You have heard from many books and many people that ego is bad, ego is an obstruction to spiritual growth, ego is an obstruction to knowledge. Ego is nothing but being unnatural. Naturalness is being at home, feeling one, and feeling close to everyone. Distance is ego. Ego means I don't consider you as a part of me sol keep distance.

When I have to show off to you or have to behave a certain way, there is no cordiality there, no love, no connection. Then the ego comes into play. Being like a child, feeling at home, making everybody one's own, dropping all defenses and boundaries, destroying all the walls in between, that is being natural. You can call it being crazy, a little bit crazy. People may think you are a little crazy. It doesn't matter. You feel light, wonderful within you. Your mind is saved.

At any cost you need to save your mind. Just meditating, doing some practices, all these will not help unless you really want to save your mind. Guard the mind from the dust which flies in from the world.

If a person who has a lot of responsibility says, "I do nothing" that has great value. Someone who is very lazy says, "I do nothing", and it has no value. If someone who IS doing all the time and has great responsibility can say, "I do nothing", then that person’s consciousness has taken a shift. An important person being a celebrity has no value.

So an ignorant person being innocent has no value. When intelligence and innocence go together, a beauty dawns - very profound, very essential.

Benefit of feeling helpless

Every parent is a door for a new soul to enter into the world. Nothing more than a door. Every artist is a door for some work of art to flow through them. All your virtues, all beauty, all that is truth spring from the same source - one source.

Love is something that is very fresh. It can’t be stale. You can't practice love. No practice can bring love in you. Love is spontaneous. It is the same with beauty. Beauty can't be practiced. You can't practice appreciation.

That is why I say "I don't know what I speak". Knowing, knowledgeability, limits. The highest knowledge is called the end of knowledge. Vedanta means the end of knowledge, truth.

It is the same with truth as with beauty, truth cannot be practiced. It can be cognized, recognized, felt, experienced and lived moment to moment, moment to moment. Observing the unpredictability of life, the unpredictability of the world creates an awe in you, a sense of wonder in you.

Every person on this earth feels helpless, completely handicapped, at some time or other whether he is John F. Kennedy, Mahatma Gandhi or someone on the street. Everyone feels helplessness, feels that things are ruled by something other than what one can logically conceive. Whatever possible conclusions we make, we still feel things happen beyond that.

When we feel helpless, we tend to become frustrated, cynical. This is the junction point. The feeling of helplessness can turn into prayer, or it can turn into frustration. Divinity can be perceived in the prayerfulness. In frustration we become more and more disheartened, dejected. Do you see that?

Prayer is not a practice, it is a happening. When from the very core of your heart, your mind, you feel helplessness that is prayer. When you are successful, you Know it. A sense of doership comes.

But when the feeling of helplessness arises, prayer can be very authentic. This authentic prayer can transform life, can bring such a force or power within us. I don't mean that we should all be miserable in order to pray. Gratefulness is very essential.

When we recognise our helplessness, we need to put a distance between ourselves and what is happening, a distance from every action. I'm talking and yet I am watching myself talk. I'm sitting here, yet I'm not just sitting here. I have entered all the things here-the cushions, the carpet, the walls, the photograph. All over it is me, an expanded awareness living life from that area beyond calculations.

We measure and talk. We calculate, we prepare and we talk. But when we talk of something which we don't know, it is very adventurous. I have never read the Bible, but I can speak on the Bible. Nor have I ever read Buddha, but I can speak about Buddha.

Letting words flow through you when you speak

What is the difference between a question and wonder? For a question we seek an answer, in wonder we don’t seek an answer. A question is related to sorrow; wonder is related to joy.

No one ever asks, ‘Why am I happy?’ When we become miserable, we ask ‘Why has this misery come to me?’ No one ever questions why there is so much beauty in the world, in creation. But why there is dishonesty?’

This ‘Why’ comes from that area of our mind that seeks to know, that seeks knowledgeability. Knowledgeability is labeling things. I don’t know what I am speaking. What you know you speak from your intellect, you speak from your knowledge. But the purpose of knowledge is to make you aware of how ignorant you are. The more you know, the more unknown remains. So, in fact, the unknown grows. What we don’t know grows.

We are born in ignorance. When we mature and we go through the process of acquiring knowledge, we again become ignorant. But there is this difference – this second “I don’t know” becomes a beautiful “I don’t know”. It is wonder. “Why this creation?” “I don’t know” “What is happening?” “I don’t know”.

An ignorant person talks and he doesn't know what he says. So also an enlightened person talks and he doesn’t know what he says. If he knows and talks, it is coming from limitation. If he doesn’t know and talks, he allows the words to flow through. He's open. He remains available to that are of the self, the consciousness, from which the words will come. An enlightened person can speak on any subject which he doesn’t know. He can sit and talk, but only if he doesn’t start thinking about it.

If you ask an enlightened person to prepare a thesis, he would fail to do it. Kabir or St. Francis would be unable to write a thesis or to write a poem, but they could sit and let the poetry flow through.

What you have known and you speak is stale. It is not fresh. But when you speak something that you don’t know, it is something fresh, it is something new. It is the most creative thing.

Talking about what you know may be creative, but definitely less creative than when you talk about something that you don’t know. In that very moment that is being created, you allow yourself to be a doorway for the creative process to spring through you. We are all just doors.

Everyone is your teacher

Know that you are a student forever. Do not underestimate anybody. Knowledge may come to you from any corner. Remember the ancient saying – let knowledge flow to me from all the sides.

Each occasion teaches you and each person teaches you. The world is your teacher. When you are always looking to learn, you will stop underestimating others. Humility will dawn in your life.

There is a nice story. A man earned a lot of money and then gave all his property to his son. The son then built a small house behind his big house and told his parents, “Now you have to stay there.” So the old couple stayed there, while the son and his family lived in the bungalow.

One day, while playing, the grandchild came to his grandfather's home, where everything was in a pathetic condition. The grandchild said, “Grandpa, be careful with your plate and chair. Don't break them.”

When he asked why, the child said, “Because tomorrow, my father will need them.” One does not realise this fact. You are also going to be old one day.

Innocent mistakes

Whenever a boundary is broken, it creates some fear. The fear creates dislike. This dislike puts us back in the boundary; you put forth defenses.

When you try to defend your position, it is such a stress. Every time you try to defend your position, it makes you more and more weak. Drop all your defenses. When you are totally defenseless, that's when you'll be strong.

Your knowledge of a mistake comes to you when you are innocent. Whatever mistake has happened, do not consider yourself a sinner because in the present moment you are again new, pure and clear. Mistakes of the past are past. When this knowledge comes, you are again perfect.

Often, mothers scold their children and afterwards feel so guilty. Okay, you got angry at your kid once or twice. Why? Because of the lack of awareness. Awareness was missing so anger came up. Knowledge of the self, truth and skill can bring out the best in you.

So, don't be afraid to make mistakes, but not the same mistakes.

It's funny, how useful humour can be

You are endowed with certain naughtiness as a child. Keep it alive. Humour will grease all tough situations. One who has humour can sail through any conflict.

Humour is the buffer that saves you from humiliation. If you refuse to be humiliated, you become invincible. Humour brings everyone together, while humiliation tears them apart. In a society torn with humiliation and insult, humour is like a breath of fresh air.

Humour should be coupled with care and concern. Humour can keep the spirit high, yet if overdone it leaves a bad taste. Humour without wisdom is shallow. Humour without sensitivity is satire – it comes back to you with more problems.

The wise use humour to bring wisdom and to lighten situations. The intelligent use humour as a shield against humiliation. The cruel use humour as a sword to insult others. The irresponsible use humour to escape from responsibility. And fools take humour too seriously.

How does one cultivate a sense of humour? Humour is not just words, it is lightness of your being. You do not have to read and repeat jokes.  You can start by:

  • Taking life not too seriously (because you will never come out of it alive)
  • Having a sense of belongingness with everybody, including those who are not friendly
  • Practicing yoga and meditation
  • Having unshakable faith in the Divine and in the laws of karma
  • Being in the company of those who live in knowledge and are humorous, and
  • A willingness to be a clown.

Understanding an atheist - I

It is difficult to see God as formless and it is difficult to see God as having a form. The formless is so abstract and God in a form appears to be too limited so some people prefer to be atheists. Atheism is not a reality; it is just a matter of convenience.

When you have a spirit of inquiry or when you search for truth, atheism falls apart. With a spirit of inquiry, you cannot deny something that you cannot disprove. An atheist denies God without first disproving God’s existence. In order to disprove God, you must have enormous knowledge and when you have enormous knowledge, you cannot disprove it.

To say that something does not exist, you must know about the whole universe. So you can never be one hundred percent atheistic. An atheist is only a believer who is sleeping. For a person to say, “I don’t believe in anything,” means he must believe in himself. So he believes in a self that he does not even know.

An atheist can never be sincere because sincerity needs depth and an atheist refuses to go to his depth. The deeper he goes, he finds a void, a field of all possibilities, and he has to accept that there are many secrets he does not know. He would then need to acknowledge his ignorance – which he refuses to do – because the moment he is sincere, he seriously starts doubting his atheism.

A doubt-free atheist is nearly impossible. An atheist can never be sincere and doubt-free. When an atheist realizes his ignorance, what does he do? Where does he go? Does he go to a guru? What does a guru do to him?

Restlessness and its remedies

There are five types of restlessness. The first type of restlessness is caused by a particular place. When you move away from that place – the street or the house – you immediately feel better. Chanting, singing, laughing and children playing can change this atmospheric restlessness. If you chant and sing, the vibration in the place changes.

The second type of restlessness is in the body. Eating the wrong food, eating vata-aggravating food, eating at odd times, not exercising and overworking can all cause physical restlessness. The remedy for this is exercise, moderation in work habits and going on a vegetable or juice diet for one or two days.

The third type of restlessness is mental restlessness. It is caused by ambition, strong thoughts, likes or dislikes. Only knowledge can cure this restlessness – seeing life from a broader perspective, having knowledge of the Self and awareness of the impermanence of everything around you. If you achieve everything, so what? After your achievement, you will die. Knowledge of your death and life, confidence in the Self and confidence in the Divine all calm down mental restlessness.

The fourth type is emotional restlessness. Any amount of knowledge cannot help here – only Kriya helps. With Kriya, all emotional restlessness vanishes. The presence of your guru, a wise person, or a saint will also help to calm your emotional restlessness.

The final type of restlessness is rare. It is the restlessness of the soul. When everything feels empty and meaningless, know you are very fortunate. That longing is the restlessness of the soul. Do not try to get rid of it – embrace it, welcome it. People do all sorts of things to get rid of it. They change places, jobs, or partners, they do this, they do that. It seems to help for some time, but it does not last.

Only this restlessness of the soul can bring authentic prayer in you. It brings perfection, siddhis and miracles in life. It is so precious to get that innermost longing for the Divine. Satsang and the presence of an enlightened one soothe the restlessness of the soul.

Why be with a guru

The main reasons to be with a guru (spiritual master) are:

  • You want to have your wishes fulfilled. You find it more pleasurable.
  • You come for comfort as everything else is more painful to you.
  • You want to evolve and become enlightened; you want to attain higher knowledge.
  • You have a vision or a goal in common with a guru, whom you see as a missionary or visionary, who can help you achieve your goal.
  • You are there just to serve and to give comfort.
  • You belong to your guru. You have no choice.

Two types of knowledge

There are two types of knowledge. The first one is pure knowledge and the second one is applied knowledge. Applied knowledge may benefit you immediately and directly, but pure knowledge benefits you indirectly in the long run.

If there are some things that you have studied or understood which you are unable to put into practice, do not get disheartened. Sometime in the future, if you do not discard as impractical the knowledge you have, it will be of use to you.

Often people discard pure knowledge for its lack of immediate application. In fact these two types of knowledge complement each other. Applied knowledge without pure knowledge remains weak. And pure knowledge without application will remain unfulfilled. Do not discard or label knowledge as impractical, and do not label yourself as weak or unworthy because you are unable to apply the knowledge in your day-today life.

Sometimes when you are alone in nature, silent, taking a walk, looking at the sand on the beach, a bird in the sky, or while meditating – suddenly knowledge will emerge and you will recognize knowledge dawning in your life.

Arguments can run counter to knowledge

A person who argues should not be given knowledge. An argumentative mind is not receptive to knowledge.

When someone is in an argumentative mood, then giving knowledge or advice is in vain. A person in an argumentative mood feels he knows it all, so he is not ready for knowledge. That is why wise people do not give advice when they are in an argumentative environment.

Argument has a purpose. It can bring out the truth if there is no emotion or sense of “I” attached to it. Argument can also be a disadvantage. It can make untruth appear to be truth.

A wise man will not take arguments seriously; he will just have fun with them. Wisdom is beyond all arguments.

One more step to knowing yourself

To be able to know yourself or to judge your actions, you need to understand tarka, vitarka and kutarka.

Kutarka is wrong logic. Most people use this logic and get caught up in ignorance. For example, the door is half open means the door is half closed. Therefore, when the door is fully open means the door is fully closed. Another example – God is love. Love is blind. Therefore God is blind.

Tarka is sequential logical understanding which increases scientific knowledge. When sequential logical understanding changes, then scientific conclusions change. For example, pesticides and antibiotics were considered to be very useful and harmless, but they are now proven to be harmful. In tarka, paradigms change.

Vitarka is asking questions to which there are no evident answers such as “Who am I?” “Where am I?” “What do I really want?” These philosophical questions bring forth spiritual knowledge, increase your awareness and bring about the blossoming of consciousness. Atma gyan (self-knowledge) increases. The wise know how to distinguish between these three. They will not apply kutarka or tarka for vitarka, or use vitarka for tarka.
